Paying for Your Education

You deserve a quality education at an affordable price. Make your investment in your education count when you attend Ashford University. You'll find one of our goals is to help you maximize your investment from initial fees through the entire financial process. That’s why at Ashford University, your textbooks are covered as long as you are an eligible servicemember, plus your technology and application fees are waived!

Whether you use Military Tuition Assistance, veterans benefits, tuition reimbursement, cash, third party billing or financial aid, you'll have help every step of the way.

Military Tuition Assistance (MTA)

If you're an active duty military, drilling reservist or a member of a National Guard, you may be eligible to receive Tuition Assistance. This in-service benefit will cover the cost of six courses yearly at Ashford University. To determine your eligibility for TA, please contact your Education Service Officer (ESO) for details.

Note: If you are a Reservist or National Guard personnel, you should also seek any tuition assistance or reimbursement that your respective employers may offer as this could lower your total out-of-pocket expenses.

Tuition Assistance "Top-Up"

If you are active duty, pursuing a Master's degree and are using TA, you may be eligible for Top-Up. Since Tuition Assistance will not cover the complete cost of tuition -- you'll appreciate this benefit. Top-Up (the Floyd D. Spence Act) permits the VA to pay the difference between your actual tuition and what Military Tuition Assistance will not cover.

Veterans Benefits

To determine your benefit status, contact a benefits counselor at the Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-888 -GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or visit www.gibill.va.gov. You have earned these benefits so be sure you use them. You'll find the process quick, easy and informative.

Once your benefit status has been determined, speak to a Military Enrollment Advisor to learn how they can best be applied to your education at Ashford University.

Changes to GI Bill, effective August 1, 2009

The new GI Bill (Chapter 33) or "Post 9/11 GI Bill," boasts the most comprehensive education benefits package since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. This new benefit does not go into effect until August 1, 2009. If you are eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill and other GI Bill benefits such as the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) you will at some point be required to make an irrevocable choice of which benefit you wish to receive.

There are many things to consider before choosing which benefit you wish to receive and whether or not to participate in the Active-Duty or Reserve GI Bill programs. Consider these important factors when making your choice: your preferred type of training and the amount of benefits you will get under each benefit.

Please note that even if you are one of our 7,000 military students using tuition assistance benefits, this new legislation will negatively impact you upon separation or retirement as it does not take into account the 64% of the active duty force who currently prefer to study online. Ashford University encourages everyone currently under chapter 30 benefits to carefully compare & choose before switching to chapter 33.

Vocational Rehabilitation

The Department of Veterans Affair's Veterans Benefits Administration's Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) service (also known as the Chapter 31 program) is vested with delivering timely, effective vocational rehabilitation services to veterans with service-connected disabilities. These services enable our injured marines, sailors, airmen, and other veterans with disabilities to make a seamless transition from military service to a successful rehabilitation and on to suitable employment after service to our Nation.

VR&E's primary benefit program is vocational rehabilitation. VR&E also provides educational and vocational counseling to eligible service members, veterans, and veterans' dependents. The outcome of this counseling is assistance in the selection of an educational or vocational goal and/or assistance in the selection of training institutions where this goal may be pursued.

To receive the very best service, please contact the Department of Veterans Affairs directly and speak with a VA representative to determine eligibility at 1-888 -GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551).

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is provided through the Federal Pell, SEOG Grant Programs and/or the Federal Family Educational Loan Programs (Stafford Subsidized, Stafford Unsubsidized, and PLUS Loans). You must be admitted to an Ashford University degree program to be eligible for federal financial aid.
